1. Overview

ScentSnap ("we," "our," or "us") is a Chrome browser extension that helps users understand perfume scent profiles and discover affordable alternatives to luxury fragrances.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our Chrome extension handles (or does not handle) your personal information. This policy applies to the ScentSnap Chrome extension and its associated website at scentsnap.app.

By installing and using ScentSnap, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

2. Data We Do Not Collect

ScentSnap does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. To be completely transparent, here is what we do not collect:

โœ“ We collect NONE of the following

  • Browsing history or URLs you visit
  • Personal details (name, email address, phone number, or location)
  • Purchase history or shopping behavior
  • Search queries or terms you enter on any website
  • Form inputs or personal data from any page you visit
  • User identifiers, cookies set by us, or device fingerprints
  • IP addresses or any network identifiers
  • Any data from pages you visit that are not supported retail sites

3. How the Extension Works

ScentSnap operates entirely using a built-in, offline fragrance database that is bundled with the extension at install time. No external server is contacted to look up fragrance information.

When you visit a supported retailer page (such as Amazon, Sephora, or Ulta), the extension reads the publicly visible product title text on that page to identify the fragrance name. This text is compared locally against the built-in database. The entire process happens inside your browser.

No product page content, URLs, or any text from the page is ever transmitted to our servers or any third party. The extension performs all matching and display logic entirely on your local machine.

The storage permission is used only to remember your local UI preferences (such as display settings) within your own browser. This data never leaves your device.

4. Chrome Permissions Explained

Google Chrome requires extensions to declare the permissions they need. ScentSnap requests the minimum permissions necessary to function. Here is a plain-English explanation of each:

Permission Why It's Needed What We Do With It
activeTab To read the product title on the current page to identify which fragrance you're viewing. We read only the product name text. We do not read any other content, forms, passwords, or page elements. Access is only granted on supported retail sites and only when the extension is active.
storage To save your local preferences (e.g., whether you've dismissed the welcome message). Preferences are stored only in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device and is never synced to any server.

We do not request permissions we don't need. We do not use the tabs, history, cookies, webRequest, or any other broad permissions that would allow tracking your activity.

5. Amazon Affiliate Disclosure

ScentSnap participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for websites and services to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

When you click a product link displayed in the ScentSnap extension and subsequently make a purchase on Amazon, ScentSnap may earn a small commission. This commission is paid by Amazon and comes at no additional cost to you. You pay exactly the same price you would pay going to Amazon directly.

All dupe recommendations and product suggestions are made based entirely on fragrance merit โ€” the similarity of scent profiles as determined by community research. We do not give preferential ranking to products with higher commission rates, and we are not paid by any brand to promote their products.

As required by the Amazon Associates Program, we disclose our affiliate relationship on this website and within the extension interface.

6. Third-Party Services

ScentSnap uses a limited number of third-party services:

  • Google Fonts: Our website uses Google Fonts (Cormorant Garamond and DM Sans) to display typography. When your browser loads these fonts, a request is made to Google's servers. This request may include your IP address. We do not control what Google does with this data. Please review Google's Privacy Policy for details. The extension itself (not the website) does not make Google Font requests.
  • Amazon: When you click affiliate links, you are directed to Amazon.com. Amazon's own privacy practices then apply. Please review Amazon's Privacy Notice.

Beyond the above, ScentSnap does not integrate with any analytics platforms, advertising networks, social media platforms, or other third-party data services.

7. Children's Privacy

ScentSnap is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. Since we do not collect personal data from any users, this requirement is inherently satisfied. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate action.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. When we update this policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of ScentSnap after changes to this policy constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
